What happened in August?
August 3, 2001
Well we have had an eventful week. First off on Sunday night Carmen was left at home by herself! I had gone for a walk and DH left about 15 min. later. He thought I'd be home in a couple of minutes. Needless to say Carmen was probably by herself a good 15-20 mins. She was watching a movie when I got home and started to cry about being scared. Needless to say DH got a "talking" to! I guess it is a good time to start Carmen on phone numbers! She does know her own and her friend but that is it. We'll have to teach her Ouma's and our neighbors and possible her Uncle's.
Carmen started back up at storytime this week. She just loves going so I know she'll do good in school. This will be her last session of storytimes
before school starts then she'll only go every other week as Allie will be going to storytime too. This week also ended our "Reading" Club
competition at the libraries. Carmen got to go to the party (on Saturday) that they have at the end of the reading club. At the "party" were some
actors that put on a play telling different stories and using kids as parts. Carmen was picked for the moon in the last story. She just stood up in front and smiled the whole time. I was so proud of her. This was her first time as an "actress"!
She is also into telling jokes. Of course most of them are kinda wacky as she makes them up so.... I got a few joke books out of the library. Now she
is going around telling jokes to EVERYONE!! lol Even when we went to the dry cleaners she told them a joke! Here are her favorite two: Q: "Why did
the joker put his father in the refrigerator?" A: "He wanted a cold pop." Q: "What did the shirt say to the pants?" A: "Met me at the clothesline.
That is were I hang out." The dry cleaners really liked the last one! lol
On Saturday (4th) the girls are modeling dresses (that I have made them, 3 outfits a piece!) at our local fair. Carmen can't wait. She even told Allie
that she wants Allie to model all by herself without my help this year! Last year was Carmen's first time modeling without me holding her hand! She did really good. After they model, then we will let them ride the rides and walk around the fair. It will be a busy day. Check back to see what places we placed! I will post them on my Forum board.
Well I'm sure I could go on but Carmen is bugging to get on the computer and play a game. So.......

Carmen did excellent in modeling Saturday (4th) at our fair. She even took Allie with her so I didn't have to model all 2 times! The girls ended up winning second on both the wedding dresses and Easter(2001) dresses that I made. We also got Honorable Mention on our Mother/Daughter dresses! Carmen was so excited to model. She looked like a princess up there! After modeling they were allowed to ride the rides. Of course Carmen wanted to go on the BIG rides too but Daddy wouldn't let her! She'll be a dare devil when she gets older! lol
Carmen also decided to do the laundry this week! Her Elmo's shirt was dirty and I had told her I wasn't going to wash it right then. Well while I was taking a shower she is hollering outside the door. Finally she comes in and asks how to make the water run in the washing machine! It took a few tries but I could tell when she finally had gotten it as my water pressure went down! When I finally got dressed I tip-toed to the back room to check on her. Here she was taking clothes out of the washing machine and putting them in the dryer! Only one thing was wrong.... the washer wasn't finished with it's cycle! lol Here she was taking clothes out and the washer was still FULL of water! She said that the clothes were HEAVY! It was all I could do not to laugh. Not only that but she had thrown everything in there! Darks and Whites! Plus a dress that needed to be in Cold water! lol I did take that out and explain to her about that.
Storytime is a little different for her now too. Since Allie is now in the Toddler group, we have to be at the library earlier. I let Carmen go play with the toys while I'm in with Allie. I had given her strict rules last week about not talking to strangers and what to do if someone tried to take her. I asked her this week to tell me the rules again (not only just to see if she remembered but we had one of her friends with us too). She remembered them all and a little tooooo well I think! On the way home (we walk to storytime), some roofers were working and one said hi to me. I of course said Hi back and immediatly Carmen said "You just talked to a stranger!" lol Now how do you explain that to a 5yr old? I told her that I knew that and that it was hard to explain. She said "Yeah, You said not to talk to strangers then you talk to a stranger!" Hmmmmmmm, HELP!! lol
We also had to buy a new fridge as ours went kapoot! Carmen kept trying to pick out the right fridge for us! She'd open them up and look inside then move on to the next one!
But probably the highlight of the week for Carmen was getting to spend the night at her Uncle & Tia's house! Yes, the Newlyweds! They haven't been married a month yet and already they let her and her uncle (he is 9) spend the night! She was in seventh heaven! It wasn't even planned so Dh had to take her some pjs. He said when he got there she was eating ice cream and watching baseball (and this was 10:00 at night!) Have no idea what time they went to bed as I'm kinda afraid to ask my sister-in-law!
Tune in next week where you'll here Carmen say "Mom, you talked to a stranger again!"

"Yay! I'm starting school in so-many days!" That is all I've heard from Carmen all week long! She has been bugging "When do I start school, mom?" So we printed out her own calender and she has it taped to her door. Every night she crosses off the day and every morning she gets up and counts how many days she has left. She is constantly telling us, "You won't see me for a couple of days as I'll be at school!" No, she isn't going to a private school but she tells us that we'll only see her on the weekends. Hmmm, wonder where she is going when she doesn't have school?
She has all of her school supplies which she helped pick out. All that is left is to go through Daddy's closet and find an "art" shirt. We even bought some jucies that were on sale and she has claimed all of them for her lunches too!
Haven't really done too much this week. We did go to a walk/bike path the other day and Carmen got to take her bike. Five minutes into the walk and she was complaining that her legs hurt. I think we figured out why! Her seat needs raised! Can't believe she is growing taller! She still has the training wheels on which will probably be on for a while as she doesn't get to ride her bike too much being as we live in town.
Right now Carmen is helping Daddy do dishes. Hmmmm... I can hear that Carmen is making a mess. But Daddy agreed to her help!
Well that is all for now. Before too long I'll be writing page after page since school does start in 11 more days or so!

August 24, 2001
What a week! Where to begin? I guess from the begining of the week, huh? Well Sunday we went up to my mom's (Ouma). And Carmen asked to spend the night! She finally got her wish! She stayed up until 1:00 am or so! Only cause her Uncle Jared (9yrs) had fallen asleep already! lol Then she didn't come home until 9 or so the next night! (Tried to talk my mom into keeping her for a week! lol We are only 2 mins away!) The reason she was late coming home was that a friend was suppose to look at one of Ouma's kittens! Maybe perform surgery and Carmen wanted to watch! The surgery never happened and by Wednesday the kitten had to be put down.
Tuesday night we took the girls to Young's Jersey Dairy for Kid's Night. Ouma, Oupa & Uncle Jared also came. At least 20 kids or so were there to go play putt-putt and have ice cream. Carmen and Jared were put into different groups, which was probably good! (They do tend to act more like brother and sister as they are so close in age!) When the kids were done eating ice cream, we went over to see the goats and feed them. On the way home the conversation some how turned to robbers.
Here is the coversation:
Carmen: "Daddy were you ever robbed."
Daddy: "Yes."
Carmen: "What did they take?"
Daddy: "A Prints Kit bag (tennis sponsers), TV, VCR, electronic stuff."
Carmen: "They took ALL that?"
Daddy: "yes, they did."
Carmen: "How many times were you robbed?"
Daddy: "three times"
Carmen: "Did they ever kidnap you?"
Daddy: "no"
Carmen: "Did they ever kidnap other kids?"
Daddy: "yes they took other kids."
Carmen: "Did they ever get caught?"
Daddy: "Yes they would end up getting caught."
Carmen: "And then the kids would go free."
And then that was the end of the conversation! (Just a note here, DH is originally from South Africa.)
On Wednesday we finally got her letter from the school telling us who her teacher is. She wasn't too happy as she will be in Kindergarten "B" and starts school the 4th of September! She started to cry, "I wanted to be Kindergarten "A" and start Friday (31st)!" Poor thing! She got over it pretty quickly though. We put stickers on her calendar on the days she goes to school. We did the first week - which is two days. We also started the second week and Carmen was like "I go to school then too??" LOL Yes kiddo, you go to school more then just two days! On a brighter note, she is riding the same bus as her Uncle Jared. She'll just be getting on before him! She is sooooo excited though! I'm happy for her.
At least once during the week I have found Carmen sleeping in Allie's bed in the middle of the night! (Allie had woken up screaming!) The next morning I asked Carmen why she had been sleeping in Allie's bed and she said "cause I wanted to sleep with her!" Carmen had been in her bed and was there when we went to sleep so that means that some time in the night Carmen had gotten up and walked to Allie's room! Crazy kid!
Now it's Friday again. Which meant grocery shopping! Ugh how Carmen is starting to hate it! She wanted to stop by Ouma's house on the way home to see the kittens as she never believed me or Uncle Jared about the kitten. She wanted to see for herself that the kitten was really gone. We didn't go up. We did later on in the night and of course she went right out to the barn! She found only the 3 kittens. I guess seeing is believing! Then guess what? She spent the night again!! This time though she didn't stay up so late as she had been up since before 8 in the morning! Tommorow we are going to see Arthur at our Library. Also we will be going to their picnic that evening as it is their 65th Anniversary!!
Come back next week as we get closer to school!
